 Kentucky Derby, May 3, 2014

The weekend festivities continued on Saturday, May 3, with the Kentucky Derby, Akumal style.  The venue shifted from the Lol Ha Beach Bar to the Turtle Bay Cafe & Bakery for this 2014 "Run for the Roses", and the Akumal throngs hit the gates early to ensure front row seating in their especially designed sky-view box seats high above courtside on the end zone.  A good time was had by all, especially the hostess, Jen Smith, who came out a big winner with the WIN and SHOW tickets.

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival.  The race is one and a quarter miles (2 km) at Churchill Downs.  Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kilograms) and fillies 121 pounds (55 kilograms).  The race is known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" or "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate duration, and is also called "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the winner.  It is the first leg of the US Triple Crown and is followed by the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes.

It is time for the Kentucky Derby, Akumal style.

And, the mint julips are flowing freely all around the sky view seats.

Sherwood and Karen are in the spirit of things with their best derby bonnets.

Jan Harper & Antonio Bolio have a front row seat, with fries.

David & Nancy Poor are also in the box seats, albeit without hats.

Jackie, sporting a very chic chapeau, & Jim Power are really up close and personal.

There's a baby up here in the skyview box!!! And look at all the drinks the kid has!!!!

Bob & Sherwood Anders and Susanne & Beryl Van Lierop are joined by Jen.

Mary Henderson is doing a booming business at the betting table as we near post time.

And the winner is California Chrome.

Jen Smith seems to have really cashed in on the betting pool.

OK, the derby is over. Put away those hats until next year.
