Kentucky Derby at Beach Bar, May 4, 2013

Mary Henderson had another back-to-back event weekend, as the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby followed closely on the heels of yesterday's Best Shirt Event.  There was another great crowd in attendance, and the pool tickets were SOLD OUT well before post time.  As the hype says, "The most exciting two minutes in sports" and this year was no exception as the favorite, Orb, came from well behind in the pack of 20 horses to easily win this exciting race.

Derby Day is a social event as well as a sporting event, and the fashionable hats are all over the place.

Here is the layout of the Lol Ha Beach Bar for this Derby event, and this group is there in the center of the action.

Mary Henderson, the matriach of Akumal's Kentucky Derby festivities is on hand with her bonnet and Mint Julip.

BB and Steve are over from their abode at Bahia Principe to partake of the festivities.

Jan Harper is looking quite smart in her Derby chapeau and Ban Rays.

Mike Stone and Antonio Bolio are up in the grandstand overlooking the finish line.

Lou and his amigo are quite excited about their chances in the pool.

The Akumal crowd is getting excited at post time nears.

Looking back from the track, you can see it is standing room only around the Lol Ha Celebrity Lounge.

BB and Steve are joined by Cheryl as the betting windows are now closed.

Late arrival Annette joins Lou in his row of the Lounge.

Bang! And like that it is over, and Steve comes away as the winner of the WIN pool.

Walter Balam Canul, the Lol Ha chef, comes away as winner of the PLACE pool.

And Cheryl takes the SHOW pool.

Considering the turn-out at this year's Derby, it it time to start thinking about the 140th 'Run for the Roses'.
