Groundhog Day, February 2, 2012

February 2012 in Akumal got started with a BIG Bang as a festive crowd gathered at the Lol Ha Beach Bar to celebrate Candlemass and Groundhog Day and the traditional road-kill groundhog jerky supplied by Akumal's own Groundhog Day Inner Circle.

Punxsutawney Phil, America's most famous weather predictor, showed his shadow Thursday, predicting winter for six more weeks, but he was in the vast minority among other groundhogs who think that spring is coming early this year.  Phil emerged from his lair Feb. 2 to see his shadow on Gobbler's Knob to predict the weather.

But groundhogs in sites around Akumal - were those groundhogs or raccoons - did not see their shadows, the Akumal Groundhog Day Inner Circle reported.

The celebration of Groundhog Day lies in a German superstition that says if a groundhog dog sees his shadow Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks and if no shadow is seen, spring will come early.  However, regardless of Phil prediction, winter hasn't really started in Akumal.

Bud & Alice Blatner, the 'official' Akumal Groundhog Day Inner Circle had Leroy& Margaret filling in during their absence.

And, a wonderful selection they brought this year, including Alaskan Marmot.

Denny & Diane Mahan scheduled their return visit to coincide with Groundhog Day and Super Bowl weekend.

Mary Henderson and Ingrid Clouther had a hard time deciding on the groundhog or marmot jerky.

Gail Rowland seems to be really enjoying it.

Kathy Farrell seems to be non-committed one way or the other. "It ain't Austin road kill."

The folks up north are saying, :If this is winter, bring it on", while the Europeans are saying, "OK NO, not more of this."

Warm, sunny Rome is blanketed with snow!!!!
