Music at Solymar, February 18, 2012

Karen Mercer, comes from Montrose, Colorado, where the band, Gotta Be Girls, is based.  Karen was back in town again, and this time, Denny & Diane Mahan scheduled her into a music night at Casa Solymar.  Karen was in Akumal back in February 2009 for the CEA Gala Dinner, where she was the lead-in act for the Dutch soprano, Karin ten Cate.

Gotta Be Girls is a Western Colorado-based all female band playing acoustic music featuring tight vocal harmonies accompanied by guitars, mandolin, bass, banjo and percussion. Talented songwriters and performers, their sound has been compared to Blame Sally, Bonnie Raitt, Sarah Mclachlin, the Indigo Girls, and KD Lang.

The band originally started as a duo in 1987 with Karen Mercer and Glenda Fletchall. Playing in many locations throughout the Southwest, their repertoire
consisted of mainly folk music and originals.  After ten years, the duo took a break, but resumed in 2007, adding Barb Bernhardt and new musical genres to the mix.  Two years later, a fourth member, Margaret Freeman, was added to the group, further expanding the group's genres.  Known predominantly as a four-person band, most recently they have occasionally been accompanied by a fifth person, Susan Walton, adding yet another dimension to the group.  Their music now covers numerous genres that emphasize vocal intricacies, driving rhythm, and signature arrangements.
