Groundhog Day, February 2, 2011

"The sky is clear. Prepare for warmth!" With those rousing words Wednesday morning, the world's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, offered hope to millions of Americans being clobbered by a monster winter storm.  Phil did not see his shadow in 2011, meaning his prediction is that an early spring is on its way.  All right, Phil didn't actually say those words.  Phil "speaks" to his human caretakers, known as the Inner Circle, in Groundhogese and tells them his forecast. The Inner Circle then translates Phil's words for the world to hear supposedly.

It was another fantabulous Groundhog Day celebration in Akumal, and a large crowd of groundhog jerky aficionados gathered at the Lol Ha Beach Bar to celebrate the good news, warm weather is on the way. 

Groundhog Day in Akumal is a lot like a rock concert, but the people are better behaved and there's a groundhog jerky from around the world involved, thanks to Akumal's Groundhog Inner Circle, Bud & Alice Blatner.  We had brownies this year too.

Punxsutawney Phil's forecast was announced in front of thousands of revelers gathered on Lol Ha Knob Bar Stools in Akumal, the tiny seaside town, a borough of about 6,100 residents.  A member of the Groundhog Inner Circle (Bud Blatner) took Phil from his tree stump home and, as the crowd held its breath, he announced,  "As I look around me, a bright sky I see and a road-kill beside me, the groundhog jerky is here and it's free."

A good time was had by all.

Tony & Judy James have had their fair share of jerky, and they are now ready for the brownies.

Alice encourages Ingrid Clouther and Margaret Wiedman, "Take more. More."

"Yes, this is absolutely the very best groundhog jerky I have had this year."

Mark the 2012 calendar for this event, and plan to come early to ensure a parking space and a stool at the beach bar.

"Here's looking at you, kid."
