Groundhog Day, February 2, 2010

Don't pack away those winter clothes just yet: This morning famed groundhog forecaster Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, meaning winter temperatures in 2010 will continue for six more weeks—if you believe that sort of thing.

It was another fantabulous Groundhog Day celebration in Akumal, and a large crowd of groundhog jerky aficionados gathered at the Lol Ha Beach Bar to celebrate what really was a bad omen weather-wise.  Winter is set to continue for six more weeks in Akumal, according to North America's most famous forecaster, Punxsutawney Phil.  The famous groundhog saw his shadow at the 124th annual Groundhog Day observance in Punxsutawney, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Groundhog Day in Akumal is a lot like a rock concert, but the people are better behaved and there's a groundhog jerky from around the world involved, thanks to Akumal's Groundhog Inner Circle.

Punxsutawney Phil's forecast was announced in front of thousands of revelers gathered on Lol Ha Knob Bar Stools in Akumal, the tiny seaside town, a borough of about 6,100 residents.  A member of the Groundhog Inner Circle (Bud Blatner) took Phil from his tree stump home and, as the crowd held its breath, he announced,  "As I look around me, a bright sky I see and a road-kill beside me, the groundhog jerky is here and it's free."

A good time was had by all.

Phil greets the crowd at the Lo Ha Beach Bar festivities.

But here is the groundhog jerky every one has come to sample.

Bud Blatner, half of the Inner Circle, explains the subleties to Barbara Miller.

"Oh my gawd. That's disgusting."

Denny Mahan and Macon Gravlee agree to stay as far away as they can get.

Margaret and Betty agree, taking up a position at a ring side table.

Diane Mahan and Judy Baxter seem to be singing the praises of the Thai groundhog jerky.

"But where do you get it? It's really not road-kill, is it?"

Barbara gets the sample test, with help from Alice Blatner, the other half of the Inner Circle

Susan and Mary-Margaret say it goes good when dunked in red wine.

Akumal's newest full-time residents, Dan & Dave, are celebrating their 1st Ground Hog Day Akumal style.

Diane and Margaret discuss the attributes of all three samples of the Inner Circle's groundhog jerky.

So, where do we find Akumal's Groundhog Day Inner Circle for a groundhog tacos dinner? Lucy's Too.

See you next year, same time same place.
