Akumal Toy Drive, January 5, 2010
Like Christmas morning in the US, Mexican children wake up
the morning of January 6th to find toys and gifts left by the Three Kings.
Día de los Reyes Magos, “Three Kings Day” or “Epiphany”, is the most special
day of the year for children throughout Mexico, and it historically portrays the
arrival of the Wise Men in Bethlehem bringing gifts to baby Jesus. However,
many children in the rural villages have never experienced the joy of receiving
a toy from the Reyes Magos. The Akumal Toy Drive is helping to change this!!
On January 5 (the day before the Three Kings), the Akumal Toy Drive came to a
conclusion when Ingrid, Malu, Jaime, and Gina delivered the toys that had been
donated to the children in the villages around Akumal. From the looks on
the faces of the children, it seems like the effort was greatly appreciated.
Cheers to another job well done.
Brief History of the Akumal Toy Drive
The Akumal Toy Drive (ATD) started in 2005 when
Gina Austin, her husband Jorge, and Jaime Medina bought some toys and
distributed them on the way to Coba. Then they decided to do the same every
Looking to see the smiles on more children’s
faces in 2006, Gina asked the owners of the houses she manages to cooperate, by
donating toys and or money. Since then, Malu has become the photographer, and
in 2007 Ingrid Datica became a member of the ATD staff.
Throughout 2009 some of the guests brought toys from the
US, and others bought toys here. So, this past January ATD had many more,
around 800 toys!!!!!
This past January, ATD went to the Zona Maya that
is on the way to Carrillo Puerto.
PLEASE NOTE: It is OK to
bring toys down all year long for the 2011 Akumal Toy Drive for Día de los
Reyes Magos. Toys and/or donations can be

your villa/condo manager to get the toy to Gina Austin.
