Groundhog Day, February 2, 2009

It was another fantabulous Groundhog Day celebration in Akumal, and a large crowd of groundhog jerky aficionados gathered at the Lol Ha Beach Bar to celebrate what really was a bad omen weather-wise.  Winter is set to continue for six more weeks in Akumal, according to North America's most famous forecaster, Punxsutawney Phil.  The famous groundhog saw his shadow at the 123rd annual Groundhog Day observance in Punxsutawney, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Punxsutawney Phil's forecast was announced in front of thousands of revelers gathered on Lol Ha Knob Bar Stools in Akumal, the tiny seaside town, a borough of about 6,100 residents.  A member of the Groundhog Inner Circle (Bud Blatner) took Phil from his tree stump home and, as the crowd held its breath, he announced,  "As I look around me, a bright sky I see and a road-kill beside me, the groundhog jerky is here and it's free."

A good time was had by all.

The Akumal Groundhog Inner Circle (Alice & Bud Blatner) fight off the crowd grabbing at the groundhog jerky.

Barbara & Tom Miller were climbing over the bar, and each other, trying to get their fair share of the groundhog jerky.

Kathy & Jim Farrell were just estatic that they got a piece of the Thai groundhog jerky.

Diane Mahan and Merieke are all smiles after having eaten their fill of the fantabulous roadkill groundhog jerky.

Ingrid & SteveC are patiently waiting to get any leftovers from the first crowd surge.

Denny Mahan prefers his groundhog jerky dipped in margaritas; mmmh, mmmh good.

Diane listens to Mary Henderson explain about the size of the hole Phil had to crawl out of.

It was also Candlemas Day, and that provided a fine backdrop and atmosphere to Groundhog Day 2009 in Akumal.
