ADDITIONAL NEWS FROM AROUND TOWN FERRIES TO/FROM FLORIDA - ALL IS VERY TENTATIVE The word is that three (3) ship lines are talking about ferry service between Florida and Calica, and they are all talking about starting service in November. Yucatan Express See http://www.yucatanexpress.com Beginning this November, a new luxury cruise ferry service - the Yucatan Express -will begin operating between Tampa, Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula (Cancun/Calica). The Yucatan Express is operated by Scotia Prince Cruises which has operated a luxury cruise/ferry between Maine and Nova Scotia for 33 years. Yucatan Express passengers will sail on the M/S Scotia Prince. It is a 8 deck luxury cruise/ferry capable of sleeping 1,100 passengers. Yucatan Explorer See http://www.yucatanexplorer.com The Yucatan Explorer, Inc., under the banner of Americas Seaways, proposes the launch of a unique transportation link across the Gulf of Mexico, connecting Tampa, Florida with two of Mexico's most popular destinations. A modern cruise ferry vessel, the M/V Yucatan Explorer will operate two separate round-trip departures from Tampa to the Yucatan each week. The departures will alternate between the Port of Calica, just south of Cancun and the Port of Progreso, only a few miles north of Merida. The transit time is approximately 32-hours. Maya Lines See http://www.mayalines.com

They have a demo system set up at
Telmex in Playa Del Carmen, and it has a "connect speed" of
10,000,000 bps. It is a lot faster than my modem and a "connect
speed" of 40,000 bps, but it is not really BLAZING fast. I
asked "When in Akumal?" They have it in Cancun and Playa del
Carmen, and over the remainder of 2002 they are working it into the
towns along the Riviera Maya to Tulum - by the end of the year. See
www.miembrosprodigy.net.mx THE AKUMAL BOWLING CONSORTIUM (ABC) The pre-season bowling consortium was kicked off on September 12 at the Kukulcan Plaza ten-pin bowling lanes, and the early results show that Steve Clouther has high average, high series, and high game in the men's division, while Ingrid Clouther leads the women's division with high average, high series, and high game. Interesting enough, Steve & Ingrid Clouther also lead the mixed couples division as well.
The pre-season schedule continues
the week of September 15 at Kukulcan Plaza. GET WELL BUTCH Butch had his second emergency lung surgery last week. Chris took him to a doctor because of some strange bacteria or fungus problem, which might require a surgery. He was bringing him back from that consultation when he started having breathing trouble again, so Chris stopped at an emergency clinic thirty miles up from here, and they did X-rays and said his lung had collapsed again!!!!! He has had a collapsed lung, and the doctors apparently are going to remove part of it. Butch is home from the hospital, but he goes back in a couple of weeks for the big one. He still has a tube in him and is taking pain pills. Their address in Gavelston is
Butch and Francys & Chris McCasland Do not hesitate to send or call in your own "Get Well" message. Butch would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
This issue of The Akumalian has a
fairly wide distribution over three different distribution lists,
and because of that, some of you may receive it twice. Others will
not receive it, because the e-mail address is 'bad' or there is no
e-mail address on file. Recipients can look at the addresses and
suggest corrections and additions. SUMMARY The Akumalian is in place primarily as a communication vehicle for the New Year's Eve party and the eventual Coconut Cabaret II. There is no commitment to a regular schedule or contents.
